Public speaking is a very important skill to develop in students, especially in today’s world. Navy Speakers club provides our 5th and 6th-grade students with opportunities to hone their public speaking skills, learn various techniques/sources to gather research on various topics, and practice healthy ways to exchange ideas through structured speeches and debates. The intent is to provide exposure to our students to the various speech types and techniques in non-competitive, safe atmosphere. The Navy Speakers Club is partnering with the Virginia Debate Academy, a local organization that brings high-school and college-level debate and speech stars to Navy to introduce our students to various forms of persuasive and informative speech styles.
Participation: The Navy Speakers Club is open to 5th and 6th graders at Navy Elementary. Applicants will be required to submit a statement of interest which explains why they want to join the Navy Speakers Club and how they would benefit from this enrichment program. A select group of Navy teachers will review the statements and select the students for the club. A Google Doc for students to complete their statement of interest will be posted here on October 3rd with a deadline of October 10th.
Registration Process: The selected students will be contacted via email to register in the program for a registration fee of $55 to cover the course content and judge/instructor time.
Program Structure: The club will meet once a month, on a Thursday, from 6-8pm at Navy Elementary Cafeteria. The sessions will alternate between instruction sessions and demonstration sessions. See the complete calendar dates below:
