Eco-Schools Thank You’s….

It takes a community to build a garden, and at Navy our community has done just that! Navy has met Dr. Stott’s challenge of raising $3250 in matching funds through donations from Navy families, classrooms, SCA and a $500 grant awarded by Scott’s Miracle Grow for an overall fundraising total of $7,500. These monies will enable renovation of the Courtyard Garden — a future pumpkin patch with ties to the kindergarten curriculum and an herb and salad greens garden for students to consume and enjoy. Donations will also allow ongoing maintenance of all three garden spaces — the Pollinator, Courtyard and the Main Garden. Thank you to the entire Navy community for your part in supporting Eco-Schools this year — your donations of money and supplies and volunteering your time and energies. We would also like to thank our PTO and Administrators for helping us spread the word about Eco-Schools and facilitate interest and involvement, our teachers for bringing classrooms outside to plant and use the gardens as learning spaces and Dr. Stott, our community member and former Navy Parent, who spearheaded this initiative through his generous donation. THANK YOU!!!!

Dave Freeman of Oaktree Property Care has played a huge and instrumental role in maintaining and expanding the Pollinator Garden. We would like to express much gratitude for his two years of service and ongoing advice and insight. Dave is much more than an owner of a landscape business, he is a true scientist and naturalist in the garden, and a wealth of knowledge! Please consider patronizing his business for your landscaping needs. Dave Freeman, Oaktree Property Care, 4819 Spruce Avenue, Fairfax, VA 22030, (703) 862-8733.

Eco-Schools A Look Ahead….

Navy families have done a terrific job with our Trex recycling initiative. You may bring in your plastics until the last day of school. Please use the summer to continue to collect your plastic films so we can begin this initiative again when the school year begins.

Eco-Schools will continue to grow it’s team of teachers, parents and students. If you have an interest in gardens/schoolyard habitats, outdoor education, recycling or energy, please consider joining this team. It is a dynamic, creative group, that is growing and we need more educators and parents to join in this initiative. You may contact Stephanie Drost,, to demonstrate your interest at any time or look to the beginning of next year for opportunities to sign up.

Enjoy your time outside in the garden this summer!
