FLL Jr.

Jr.FLL is a hands on program designed to capture young children’s curiosity and direct it toward discovering how science and technology impact the world around them. Focused on building an interest in science and engineering, the program features a real world challenge, to be explored through research, critical thinking and imagination. Guided by adult coaches and the Jr.FLL Core Values, team members work with LEGO elements and motorized parts to build ideas and concepts and present them for review.

Who can participate in Navy Jr. FLL teams? Participation is open to 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders. Teams will be formed during the month of September. Each Jr.FLL Team, consisting of 6 students, must have at least two parent coaches. The number of student slots available for this program is dependent on the number of volunteer parent coaches.

What is a Jr. FLL parent coach? Coaching requires no special skills — you do not need an engineering background or have any technical skills. All the materials needed to run a team are provided. All it takes is the willingness to help the team and a couple of hours out of your week.  Navy program coordinator will also provide a Jr.FLL parent coach training session at the beginning of the season as well as guidance to support the parent coaches throughout the season.

What is the time commitment for Jr. FLL participants? Teams generally require 6-8 weeks to complete a project. We recommend for teams to meet for about 1-2 hours – once or twice per week to work on their project. Parent coaches, with input from the parents of the team members, can decide on the team’s meeting schedule and location. Teams will have an opportunity to attend one of the Jr. FLL Expos in our area during the Challenge Season, 2014-2015.

How do I register? Interested parents must attend a Parent Information Meeting on September 23 at Navy. Parents will be informed about Jr.FLL team placement following the Information Meeting, and following the identification and approval of parent volunteer coaches. Again, number of student slots available for this program is dependent on the number of volunteer parent coaches. $150 program registration fee, payable via the Navy PTO online registration system, will be due after the student has been placed in a team. Jr.FLL Student Behavioral Contract must also be reviewed, signed and returned by both the participating student and his/her parents in order to participate in a team.
