Navy Skate Night

Join Us for a Night of Skating

Reston Town Center Ice Rink

Please join us in our annual Skate Night at Reston Town Center Ice Rink on Thursday, January 26th from 4:30 – 9:00pm.  We invite all Navy family and friends for a evening of fun sponsored by the Navy PTO.

$3 OF EACH $10 SKATING FEE WILL GO RIGHT BACK TO NAVY! 
(Stop by the Navy PTO table next to the rink to get a ticket)

We will also have hot chocolate ($1.50), cookies and glow bracelets ($0.50) on sale.

The Navy PTO is thankful for Reston Town Center Ice Rink for giving us the opportunity to host the Skate Night this year.  We hope you all can join us to make this a successful and fun event – it is sure to be a great time for the whole family!

Foreign Language Classes – Interest Survey

The Navy PTO, in conjunction with Fairfax County Public Schools’ Adult and Community Education, plans to offer world language classes before and after school if there is sufficient interest.

If you and your child are interested in attending FLEX classes, please print and complete the FLEX Interest Survey and return to your child’s classroom teacher before January 18th.

Winter After School Activities

The Winter After School Activities sessions will be starting soon. This session the PTO is pleased to offer Basketball, Chess Club, Acting for Young People and Mad Science.  Information about these after school activities and how to sign up will begin to come home in the January 6th Friday folder.

All registrations will be done online at www.navypto.org beginning on January 11th at 6am. Registration is first come, first served — classes do fill up, so be sure to register early!

Navy Blood Drive

Date: Monday, January 9, 2012
Time: 10:00 am to 2:30 pm
Location: Bloodmobile in the Navy Kiss & Ride Parking Lot

Navy Elementary and the PTO are again partnering with Inova Blood Services to hold a blood drive in memory of Mrs. Jinx Amon, a longtime Navy Kindergarten teacher. There is always a need for blood donors in order to maintain the levels to support our community. Please consider taking the time to make a donation in order to help those that rely on our blood banks during times of illness or injury.

Appointments may be made either by contacting Angela Evans at ang.evans5@gmail.com or through the Inova Blood Services online tool. To schedule using the online tool go to www.inovabloodsaves.org.  Click on “Donate Blood.” Type in our sponsor code – 7122 – and then hit “enter.” The Navy Blood Drive will be listed. Click on that drive and then schedule your appointment. You may need to register as an Inova donor if you haven’t already.

Teacher of the Year Awards

Nomination Info and Deadline

All of our teachers here at Navy are out of this world fabulous, but do you feel there is one that should be named Teacher of the Year? If so, let’s be sure to nominate them for this incredible honor!

The Teacher of the Year Award is Fairfax County Public School’s top honor to recognize excellence in the teaching profession. The winner, finalists, and nominees are all honored at a special reception and ceremony in the spring.  The winner will also be the recipient of the Washington Post Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher Award and compete for the Virginia Department of Education State Teacher of the Year Award.

Parents, students, administrators, FCPS staff and teachers, Fairfax County government employees, and Fairfax County citizens are invited and encouraged to nominate a deserving teacher for this prestigious award.

Apparel Delivery

All Navy Apparel orders have been delivered to the classroom teachers for distribution and should be sent home with children on Wednesday, November 23rd.

Please note, there has been a delay in receiving the Navy Magnets from our vendor and the magnets will be distributed in early December.

Community Outreach

Hat & Mitten Drive

Many people in our own community are facing challenging circumstances. Please give the gift of warmth this winter by donating new mittens, hats and scarves to those in need.

What: Please bring new hats, mittens or scarves.

When: November 7 – November 30

Where: Please drop off all donations to the bin marked “Hat/Mitten Drive” located outside of the front office.

**All sizes, and both children’s and adults are needed**

Your donations will be distributed through the Embry Rucker Community Shelter in Reston.

Congratulations to Mrs. Freeman and her 4th grade class for winning the First Quarter Glory Days contest!

Fall Festival Tonight, 6:30-8:30 pm

We are looking forward to seeing everyone at tonight’s Navy Fall Festival; it is sure to be another fun-filled night of games, music & food!  There are so many exciting activities planned for the students:

  • Pumpkin Contest - view all the entries and find out the winners!
  • Hallway Games - 9 games with prizes!
  • Dinner – come hungry for Pizza &  Subs!
  • Bake Sale - homemade desserts!
  • Free Face Painting - add to your costume!
  • Navy Apparel Sale - final night to see samples and place your orders!
  • DJ Matt - dance the night away!

There is no entry fee and all games & activities are FREE except the Wheel of Fortune Game ($1).  This event is open to Navy Elementary students, parents, and younger siblings.  All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Please remember:

  • Students must be accompanied by an adult to attend and when leaving the building.  Parents cannot ”drop off” and leave the event – door monitors will not let you into the Fall Festival without an adult.
  • The school playground is only open to students who are being supervised by an adult.
  • Costumes should be appropriate and no costume weapons are allowed.
  • Be considerate of the volunteers running the games by following directions and waiting patiently for a turn.
  • Additional parking can be found at Childtime, which is off Ox Trail.  Cars parked on Ox Trail may be ticketed and or towed.
  • We strongly encourage carpooling.

Box Tops Contest

October 1st – October 16th

 

Navy collects Box Tops for Education found on many food and non-food products.  See the list of participating products.

Our school receives $.10 for each label. Please be on the lookout for these labels.

 

Just cut and send in box tops to your classroom.  Please put them in a plastic bag with your Teacher’s Name and Grade on the bag.

The class with the most box tops wins a Popsicle Party!

Chess Club Spots Still Available

The Navy Elementary School Chess Program provides students in 2nd –  6th grade the opportunity to learn about and play chess.  It offers a fun,  low pressure chess instruction and play in a controlled scholastic environment and interactive lessons, taught by an experienced adult chess teacher.

Sessions are available 3:30-4:30pm on Tuesdays (Beginner), Thursdays (Intermediate) and Fridays (Intermediate-Advanced).

We are very excited to host the Ice Cream Social and Bingo Event tonight from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.   Please remember the following:

* Students must be accompanied by an adult to attend; please no “drop-offs”.

* Please do not park on Ox Trail; your car will be ticketed and/or towed.
* Additional parking can be found at Childtime, which is off Ox Trail.

Annual Fall Fundraiser Kick-off

Our annual no-sell Fall Fundraiser supported by the wonderful parents here at Navy kicks off today.

Once again this year, we are asking for your help as we try to reach our goal of $27,000. Reaching our goal would provide all of the funding the PTO has pledged towards field trips, school events, staff development support, special student activities and so much more. We are asking for your support by donating $50 for each student you have here at Navy. If you can give more, please do!  That’s it…nothing else to buy or sell.
